How to Use the Snapping Tool in Premiere Pro (For Faster Editing)

If you’re new to editing in Premiere Pro, mastering the Snapping Tool—also known as the magnet tool—is a quick way to make your timeline more efficient. It helps align clips precisely, prevents unwanted gaps, and saves you time while dragging or trimming footage.

This guide will show you exactly how to use it and why it matters.

Step 1: Locate the Snapping Tool

In your timeline toolbar, look for a small magnet icon. That’s the Snapping Tool.

  • When it’s on, clips will automatically align to the edges of other clips, cuts, and markers

  • When it’s off, clips move freely without alignment assistance

You can toggle it by clicking the icon.

Step 2: See It in Action

With Snapping turned on:

  • Try dragging a clip—notice how it “snaps” to the next clip or timeline marker

  • Duplicate a clip by holding Alt (Windows) or Command (Mac) and dragging it

  • You’ll see the duplicate also snap into position

This is helpful when stacking footage, arranging layers, or placing transitions cleanly.

Step 3: Turn Snapping Off

If you need more flexibility, you can disable snapping:

  • Click the magnet icon to turn it off

  • Now clips will move freely and won’t stick to other elements on the timeline

This is useful for fine-tuned placement or creative timing changes.

Step 4: Use the Shortcut (S)

Once you’re more comfortable, there’s a faster way:

  • Press S on your keyboard to toggle Snapping on or off

  • No need to reach for the icon every time

This shortcut becomes second nature as your editing speed increases.

The Snapping Tool is a simple but powerful feature that helps streamline your editing process. Once you start using it, you’ll wonder how you ever edited without it.
