How to Extend or Shorten Music with the Remix Tool in Premiere Pro

Timing your music to match a video cut used to require slicing, fading, and hoping it hit the beat just right. But Adobe Premiere Pro now includes a powerful feature that simplifies the process—the Remix Tool. This lets you stretch or shorten music tracks automatically to fit the length of your timeline.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to use the Remix Tool for quick, flexible audio edits without the manual hassle.

Why Use the Remix Tool?

The Remix Tool is great when you:

  • Need a music track to end exactly with your footage

  • Want to make audio fit a timed segment without noticeable cuts

  • Are working on fast-turnaround projects like reels, corporate videos, or event recaps

  • Don’t want to manually trim, fade, or loop audio

It analyzes the song’s structure and remixes it while preserving rhythm and transitions.

Step 1: Open the Remix Tool

If the Remix Tool isn’t already visible:

  1. Go to Window > Tools

  2. In the toolbar, click and hold the Ripple Edit Tool

  3. From the dropdown, select the Remix Tool

This tool will now be active in your timeline.

Step 2: Use the Remix Tool to Adjust Audio Length

Once the Remix Tool is active:

  • Select your music track

  • Click and drag the edge of the clip left or right

  • Premiere will automatically remix the audio to fit the new length

You’ll see the waveform regenerate as the new timing takes effect. It's fast and surprisingly accurate for most background music.

Step 3: Add a Fade-Out

To polish the transition:

  • Right-click the end of your audio clip

  • Select Apply Default Transition

  • This will add a fade-out so the music ends smoothly

Great for scenes like dance sequences, product reveals, or interview fade-outs.

Step 4: Precision Tips

While the Remix Tool is excellent, it may not always hit exact frame lengths:

  • If your target time is highly specific (like 1:29:00), the tool may overshoot or undershoot

  • In these cases, try adjusting the handle slightly and testing different endpoints

  • Not all songs remix well, so results may vary depending on the structure of the track

For songs that need perfect timing or a precise musical resolution, manual editing may still be needed.

That’s How It’s Done

The Remix Tool is one of the best time-saving features in Premiere Pro. It gives beginner editors the ability to match audio length to a cut without digging into music editing skills.
