API Keys

Some Filmit plugins connect to third-party services. You provide your own API key, and it syncs across all your devices automatically.

What are API keys?

An API key is a unique code that lets a plugin talk to an external service on your behalf. For example, GIFer uses a GIPHY API key to search and display GIFs inside After Effects and Premiere Pro.

You create your own API key (free) from the service's website, paste it into your Filmit account, and every plugin that needs it will use it automatically across all your devices.

How syncing works

1
Get your API key

Create a free account on the service's website and generate an API key.

2
Save it to your account

Paste the key in your API Keys settings on the website or in Filmit Studio's Settings page.

3
It syncs everywhere

Your key is stored securely in your Filmit account. Any device you sign into will have it automatically.

⚠️

Never share your API keys

  • API keys are like passwords — they grant access to your account on that service.
  • Never post them publicly (GitHub, Discord, forums, social media).
  • Never send them to anyone via email or chat.
  • If you think a key has been exposed, regenerate it immediately on the service's website.
  • Filmit will never ask you for your API key outside of the app or your account settings.
💡
A note on AI-powered tools

Some Filmit plugins use AI APIs like OpenAI and Anthropic to power features like text generation and creative assistance. These APIs charge per use, which means they generate a cost to you as the user.

While we do develop tools that use AI where it genuinely adds value, this is not our primary focus. The majority of Filmit tools are designed to augment your creative workflow, save you time, and enhance your output — all at zero API cost.

Tools like GridMaker, GIFer, ColorMaster, CallOuts, and most of our catalog work entirely offline or use free APIs. We believe the best tools should make you faster and more creative without a recurring API bill.
